Technical Sessions:

SEI: The I-95 Tacony Viaduct

Presenters Robin Dominick, P.E., PMP, Avi Hawver, P.E., and Michael Giovannitti, P.E., will review the I-95, Section BS2 project, focusing on the Tacony viaduct. They will present on the design process and challenges of the roadway alignments, structural alternatives, foundations, curved steel girders, and integral post-tensioned concrete cross girders. Since the project is currently under construction, the presentation will also feature a summary of the O-cell testing and resulting field modifications to the large diameter drilled shafts.

DVGI: Rigid Inclusion Support for the Potomac Yard Metro Station

Presenter Brandon Buschmeier, P.E., will discuss the Potomac Yard Metro Station. Inaugurated in May 2023, the station serves as a crucial link between Alexandria, VA, and Washington DC. This station, along with the new rail lines and associated pedestrian walkways and bridges, is supported by Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC's). The CMC's employ different diameters, spacings, and depths and are designed to increase the bearing capacity of the station site, reduce long-term settlement of the station and associated structures, and provide a more cost-effective solution than a traditional deep foundation. The presentation will also build upon the knowledge and perspectives acquired from the Potomac Yard Station by exploring the design principles of CMC's in soils of various compositions and under differing load conditions. It will also examine the strengths and limitations inherent in using CMC's on construction projects in the DMV area and beyond.

T&DI/CME: Ridge Pike Improvement Program

Presenter Matt Edmond will describe the ongoing 4-phase program for long-awaited improvements (roadway reconstruction, widening, drainage, signals) on Ridge Pike from the Philadelphia County line (Northwestern Avenue) to Belvoir Road in Whitemarsh and Plymouth Townships. The first two phases are under construction, a third is in design, and the fourth is in planning.
